Hi Everyone!

The countdown is on! Less than a month until Rhode Races Newport! Hopefully by now, you have already checked out my initial preview when I announced I'd be doing this run, but if not, you can still check out my initial preview here!

Hopefully the views, hype video, and daffodil festival mentioned in my previous preview are more than enough to peak your interest.

Added incentive.. How about Beer and Pizza?

Pre-Race:

Did I mention the bib pickup is at a brewery/distillery on Friday?!

Newport Storm: ranked a 4.5/5 on Facebook. Their fb page can be found here. They currently have at least five beers on tap. Porters, Red Ale, and IPA's! Their beer is also available in cans and bottles, will definitely be picking some up to go as well! They also offer brewery tours that include tasters and a glass for $9. They are also a distillery, producing a whiskey and a couple rums! I will be picking up my packed on Friday, will definitely "sample" what they have to offer. ;)

Post Race: Beer and Pizza! Will definitely be craving that post-race beer and food after the race! Yum!

The party tent is hosted by RI Brewers Guild! There will be various local breweries and beers to choose from! Check out their facebook page here!

Pizza! Provided by PieZoni's! Check out their facebook page here! Yum!

Weekly Running Update: January 28th, 2018

Happy Sunday Funday All! Hope everyone is doing well!

My week in running:

Monday: 6.22 miles after work. Definitely had a case of the Monday's. Yesterday I did 4 hrs yard work, and later enjoyed adult beverages while watching football. Back and shoulders hurt this morning, and overall tiredness at work. Scheduled for 50 min run, was not looking forward to it. Besides the hills, it wasn't as bad as I expected. Later Monday night, I did foam roll.
Tuesday: 3.11 miles after work. Tues/Thu is also strength training day. Crunches, planks, curls, tri extensions, push-ups before work. I didn't go to bed early as planned Monday, but still much more well rested that the day before. Felt good on the run.

Tuesday, January 23rd, also marked the anniversary of a snow storm two years ago. I remember it well, it started overnight and went almost all day. My previous run streak was in the 20's and I will always remember how angry I was the next day when I restarted my streak.

Wednesday: 4 miles. I failed to foam roll last night, I foam rolled this morning. Wednesday is my work from home day, lunch run done! Cooler weather than the past few days, but not an issue. Glad to at least be able to see the sun! The run felt good overall. I did run into some obstacles along the way. The road outside of my neighborhood is pretty busy, a section of the sidewalk was under construction! Had to wait a few for cars to go by to get on the street. Next obstacle, a car coming out of a driveway looked one way but not the other. Glad I was able to get their attention! Last obstacle, a trash truck stopping at a local business blocked the sidewalk as well! had to wait a few for cars to go by! A few annoyances, but still enjoyed my run today!
Thursday: 3.11 miles after work. Felt good, but shins were a bit tight. Should hydrate and stretch. I did foam roll, but could have done better stretching the shins.
Friday: 4.5 mi+ (40 min). Saw the sunset last night, sun rise this morning. That wasn't planned. Woke up early, tossed and turned for a minute, and then the thought set in "oh hey, if you get up now you can get that run in before work!". Up before 5, out the door by 6. A bit cooler out, trying to take it easy for tomorrow's long run. Felt decent overall. Towards the end of my run... saw a skunk! it was maybe 20 ft from me! I went to the other side of the street and it just waddled away! So often when I see an animal at night I wonder if its a cat, skunk, or whatever. It was definitely a skunk. Sorry, no photo-op. lol Will try to hydrate during the day, stretch/foam roll tonight before bed. Did end up drinking at least 5+ waters and foam rolled to be somewhat fresh for tomorrow's long run.

Saturday: Long run day! 11 miles! Plans later in the day, set my alarm just in case, but of course, up before my alarm! Worked for a few minutes. Got ready to leave, couldn't find a glove! Went crazy, but I found it! At the trail (Pennypack Creek) by 7:30. A bit cool to start, but not an issue, the trail was a bit solid though. Trail is 5.25 mi. Park in the middle. Knew I would have to make up .5 somewhere, wasn't sure where I would do it yet, there are some side shoots I should check out more often. Out and back on the more gradual incline side first, went well. On the way back there was a railroad crossing that was in progress, ran in circles for a min or two. Passed my car at the mid point, failed to hydrate. ('doh!) After the parking lot there is a street light, it was red, ran in circles for a min or two. The other side of the trail is flatter for a bit, and has a decent hill at the end.  Around the 50 min mark bumped into some trail regulars and ran with them for a few min, didn't fuel at my normal time, but made sure to fuel at the turn around point. Made it back with about .15 to do, ran in one more circle. Got the .5 in running circles. lol Planned on doing 8:20 pace and fading to about 8:40, felt good for most of the way, was able to maintain my desired pace.

This week's social activity: rescheduled bday dinner (@IronAbbey) for my pops! Darn snow got in the way of the orig date. Below is a Peak Organic Ripe DIPA!
Sunday: Rest day, one for the streak. Streak day 736. Woke up early, but took my time getting ready. Sunrise was slow to start, didn't realize it was going to be a rainy morning! Out the door around 7:30. Rain day, backup headphones, shoes, and no glasses. Rain was more of a light drizzle, it wasn't that bad. It was a bit humid out, ditched the hat and gloves early. I know it's rest day, I should take it easy, but it's also tempting to bust out some 5k speed and work on breathing. Overall, the run felt great.
This was week 6 of half marathon training for the Philadelphia Love Run, aka #LoveRunPhilly. Right after the Love Run is the Hot Chocolate 15k, #hc15k! Am using the below training program. If you're doing the #hc15k, they provide a training program as well!

Weekly Running Update: January 14th, 2018

Hi Everyone!  Happy Sunday Funday! Hope everyone had a great week in training! (and in general of course)

My week in training:

Monday: 5.4 miles (45 min). Day off from work. Hotel treadmill run. I usually hate treadmills, but with the recent temps and snow, I didn't mind the idea of the treadmill. Set it to a comfortable pace. Had ESPN and music on, but still found myself counting down the time. Enjoyed the break from outdoors though.
Tuesday: 3.11 miles after work. A heat wave starting today, 40's! Weather was refreshing!

Wednesday: 4 miles. My work from home day. It was a crazy morning at work. Was thankful to be able to get out there on my lunch break to reset. Refreshing run, but a little bit of pain in lower back, shins, etc. Will try to hydrate and stretch.
Thursday: 3.11 miles after work. Heat wave in affect through Friday. Still in the 50's after work! Short sleeves! Run was a bit tight to start, but felt good overall.
Friday: 4 miles after work. 60 degrees! Rained all day, snow is gone! The rain cleared up just before my run. Was Just a mist. Got it done before the downpour resumed!
Saturday: 6 miles at the trail (Pennypack Creek). Long run day! But according to the schedule, "only 6 miles". Yay! Shortest long run of the plan. Huge temperature drop from yesterday. 38/wind chill 16. Went out the door with no pants on, turned right back around. Another layer needed! lol  Was definitely a bit cooler, but once I got going, it felt great! Was so happy to do a trail run with no snow! After the run, decided to take a vid. With the snow melt and pouring all day yesterday, the creeks were pretty active. Wanted to get a close up, on my way down took a mud slide, close to a fall. That would have been a mess!

Saturday afternoon: enjoyed a few Nugget Nectars and an Eagles win! Nugget Nectar is a seasonal release by a Pa brewery, definitely one of my favs!
Sunday: 1 mile. Rest day, one for the streak. Streak day 722. Woke up early, but took my time getting ready. Not much on the docket for today. Rest day mile, and knew it was going to be a bit chilly. Eventually got out around 8. Probably the best 1 miler in a bit, and it felt almost effortless. Not sure if it was the recovery, just trying to get it over with, breathing pace with the cold air, but it felt great!
This was week 4 of half marathon training for the Philadelphia Love Run, aka #LoveRunPhilly. Right after the Love Run is the Hot Chocolate 15k, #hc15k! Am using the below training program. If you're doing the #hc15k, they provide a training program as well!

Weekly Running Update: December 17th, 2017.

Hi Everyone!

How's everyone doing with their training during the holiday season?? Such a busy/exciting time of yr. Hope everyone has a happy holiday!

My week in running:

Monday: 5 miles. Day off from work, able to hit up the trail (Pennypack Creek)! Rare, slept in a bit, 7:15! No major plans till later, took my time getting ready. Temps hit 40 yesterday, snow around home was clear from the streets. Wasn't sure how the trail would be, packed the Yaktrax just in case. Glad I did. There were spots that were clear, but most of the way still had some type of snow. Mostly slush, but some packed ice, and a bit of powder. Felt safe, but definitely slowed down a bit, could feel the extra effort from calves up to the glutes.
New sign up, my rail trail has some history, woah! Rip.

Birthday celebration #5 (or so). Dinner with my pops at Iron Abbey. Pic below is their sangria, and I had Stone Enjoy by IPA. Second pic is a Peanut Butter Bomb (a ganache)
Tuesday: 4 mi after work. First day back to work after a four day weekend, blah. After work, ran a couple errands first. Gets dark a few minutes out of work, so was definitely a night run! The hills got me today. Not sure if it was the extra effort from the snow runs, or the long day, but they got me. Will be sure to get some revenge on them at a later point.

Wednesday: 3.11 mi. My work from home day, lunch time run! Today, was a bit chilly! Reports the wind chill could be in the teens to single digits! I'm sure we'll get a bunch of days like this through the season, but today was the first. First time busting out the running pants. Still trying to remember what temps, what layers, but I'm good in shorts 30 to high 20's. So. lunch time, ready to run! Still tight in some spots, and pants may have added to that, but wasn't bad. There were some points where wind was coming at me as going up hills, but got through it. Not sure what temp I'll need the face-mask, but was okay today. Guess the sun helped! ha!
Thursday: 5 miles after work. Wednesday night, it snowed about an inch. The roads were clear by the time I got out of work, but several sidewalks were untouched or icy. I was forced to stick to the streets. My neighborhood route involves some zigzagging, then followed by a big loop around, had to cut out that loop. Found my self doing straightaways back and forth and then moving on to the next block. This felt good early, and was able to maintain. Cutting out the sidewalk loop portions also cut out some of the worse hills!

Friday: 5k before work. I woke up early, before 5. Tossed and turned for a few and then started thinking about running. That's it, I'm up! Had my coffee, did a short workout and then head out around 6. The wind chill was around 20, but felt good. Did more straightaways, but was able to incorporate a couple hills at the end.
Below pics of the sunrise are flash vs no flash:
Saturday: 8 miles. It snowed Friday afternoon into early evening. The township wasn't prepared for as much as we got. I had to choose between slushy and ice roads or the trail, which would still have all the snow. Went to the trail. Still not on a training plan for a few days, so went with no real agenda. But knew I wanted to do more than 5. Got to the trail after 9, the ranger didn't drive by yet to leave any tracks, plenty of powder, but surprisingly other morning people there already, plenty of footsteps already compacted some of the snow. It was a yaktrax day for sure. Tried to do a steady 8:45 for half marathon pace, but that went out the door quickly, definitely extra effort due to the snow. My trail is just over 2.75 in each direction, park my car in the middle, passed it at 5.5, stopped to hydrate, fuel, considered leaving, but got a second wind to do a few more. Snow running is fun at first, but it is work!
I recently wrote a review of Yaktrax pros, if you are active in the snow, check it out here.
Stopped at one of the bridges I pass by and shot a vid from the other side of the water. I never go on that side of the bridge, but found some more trails to explore. Not sure if they are suitable for running or geared more towards hiking. Will explore more in the spring.

Sunday: rest day, one for the streak. Streak day 694. Most of the snow has melted from the streets, a couple spots of ice on the sidewalks still. Either they didn't get enough sun, or the people did a lousy job shoveling. Was clear most of the way except a few houses. Was a brisk 28 degrees, but 80% humidity. At least we have that going for us. haha..

December goals:
  • Have fun! No race training for a few more weeks, enjoy the trail when you can and do whatever I want! Update: calculated days till race day. 14 week training plan starts 12/17!
  • 135 miles. No way I'll get 1700 miles for the year, but 1650 may be doable.

Future races registered for/considering:
  • 03/24/18 - Phillies 5k. Have never done races back to back, already registered for the Love Run, but would hate to miss the Phillies 5k. "Free" baseball tickets!  2017 review here!
  • 03/25/18 - Philadelphia Love Run half marathon. Love the love run! Check out my 2017 review here.

Weekly Running Update: December 10th, 2017

Hi everyone!

How's everyone's training going?!

I still have a couple weeks until I'm on training plan for a race. Just mixing it up for now. (not too much, pretty similar to what the plan will call for, but on my own terms, for now!) lol

My week in running:

Monday: 5 miles. I had the day off work to catch up on chores and holiday shopping, but first, gotta run! Woke up at my normal time. Was a bit tired, but up. The temp was 32, before wind chill. Got to the trail (Pennypack Creek) around 8. I didn't warm up or stretch beforehand, was tight most of the way. Didn't take my normal Sunday rest day, and wanted to take advantage of being able to get to the trail today, glad I did since i haven't been there in a bit. Will do a rest day tomorrow.

Tuesday: 1 mile after work. Decided to do a rest day since I skipped Sunday rest day.
Wednesday: 4 miles. My work from home day, lunch run. And boy did I need it! The perfect stress reliever after a crazy morning. Was a bit chilly today, but didn't wear any extra layers. Warmed up mid 1. Things a bit tight to start, but better as it went along. Hills were a good challenge today.
Advantage of getting the run out of the way, able to run errands after work, sarcastic yay!
Thursday: 4 miles before work. Had plans immediately after work, set the alarm to get the run in early. A bit tired to start, but the brisk air got me going! Was pushing it the last quarter, afterwards my neighbor who's a chronic smoker made a comment on my breathing, the nerve!
After work, my company had its annual award show (holiday party). Hors d'oeuvre's, presentation, than an unofficial off-site party at a nearby ale house. Miller's Ale House. Not in honor of my bday, but two days before is close enough! Birthday celebration #2 (#1 was last week). Pictured below, Victory Dirt Wolf, my go-to DIPA.
Friday: 5 miles. Day off work, able to hit the trail! Woke up around my normal time, head out to the trail around 8. Temp was 32, chill 30, gloves and hat but no extra layers. Cool heading out but was comfortable.
Friday night, went to an authentic Greek restaurant for my birthday with my in-laws. I have had gyro's before, but never been to an authentic Greek restaurant! Yanni's, was unique and excellent! The restaurant is byob, but I didn't bring anything. But, as part of my birthday gift, my in-laws got me Dirt Wolf, how did they know? ;) Birthday celebration #3.
Saturday: long run day! Haven't really had a long run day since the marathon, and was feeling ready for a couple more miles. Already predetermined to do 10. Early in the week, heard there was a chance of flurries in the forecast. Yesterday, the forecast on one app was 1-3 inches, and 3-5 inches on another. Didn't set my alarm, but still got up around the same time. Took my time getting ready, had my coffee, worked for a few minutes. Got to the trail around 8. Was going to try a steady medium pace. The brisk air felt good. My trail is 5.25 miles. Did a 1/4 and on the way back found out that part of my trail was closed for hunting. So I did the 2.5 back and forth twice. This side of the trail has a steady incline, but didn't have any issues maintaining my desired pace. It did start snowing going into my second round of the trail, and it stayed steady. It ended up snowing the rest of the day! But only accumulating to a few inches.

My actual birthday. The big 4-0! The snow did affect our plans, but was still able to go out to my fav spot for wings, Mad Mex! and of course, had a Dirt Wolf! Birthday celebration #4. I don't usually make a point to celebrate my birthday so many times, usually just once or twice. But the stars aligned, and was able to. Will be rescheduling part of my plans, so there will at least a fifth celebration. Usually I freak out a bit about getting older, but not this yr. Looking forward to so many things, not thinking about it.
Sunday: 1 mile. rest day, one for the streak. Streak day 687. I don't usually go to the trail for 1 milers, but all the night neighborhood runs have me wanting to go to the trail as often as possible. The neighborhood runs serve a good purpose, especially for hill training, but I definitely prefer the nature scenery over it. This morning wind chill was 18. I didn't have any other plans for several hours, so I took my time around the house with light chores. Was closer to 35 when I got to the trail. Still plenty of snow on the trail, the perfect time to bust out the yaktrax! The snow was a mix, some slushy, little bit of ice, and plenty of powder. I feel safe wearing the yaktrax, but still try to be aware in case I slip and fall. Between the snow and the yaktrax, definitely takes a bit more effort from the calves!

December goals:
  • Have fun! No race training for a few more weeks, enjoy the trail when you can and do whatever I want!
  • 135 miles. No way I'll get 1700 miles for the yr, but 1650 may be doable.

  • 04/07/18 - Hot Chocolate 5k/15k. Still debating on this one, will let you know!
  • May, 2018. (Date TBD) Broad Street Run!  Assuming I win the lottery! My 2017 review here.

What is everyone currently training for? Signed up for a race? New to running, or maintaining until a race peaks interest? Whatever it is, good luck to everyone with their training, keep kicking butt!!
